When you move to a new house, it's easy to just toss things into closets in order to get them out of your way. Unfortunately, these closets don't always get cleaned out again before you start adding a lot more stuff. This is particularly true of closets in bedrooms which become catch-alls for anything and everything you want to store. You will find, though, that with a few inexpensive organizers, you will be able to create order out of chaos.

Start by emptying your whole bedroom closet, or if you're just moving in, skip the temptation of sticking things in the closets and start out right organizing. While the closet is empty, you need to wipe down the entire space. You may even want to give the closet a fresh coat of paint to match the bedroom. That way, you'll get rid of any leftover grime or marks and be starting fresh and clean.

You'll be able to find a variety of shapes and sizes of closet organizers at a hardware or home improvement store. Some of the organizers are coated metal and some are made of wood, but both have been designed to easily adjust to the space you have. You can put together a system of hooks, shelving, hanging bars, bins, cubbies, and drawers with very little actual labor involved. You can also make your own shelves using scrap wood as brackets and boards for shelves.
Double hanging bars can be nifty if you have a lot of short items to hang such as pants, skirts, and shirts. By doing this, you'll double your hanging space. If most of your clothes are longer items, such as dresses, you probably won't want this kind of a configuration. A stack of bins will be ideal for storing smaller items. You can even color code these bins, such as all red ones are for shoes, blue ones are for jewelry, yellow ones are for handbags, and so on. It's also a good idea to label each bin so that you'll know exactly what each one contains. That can save you a lot of searching time later on.
If you feel you can't afford to buy closet organizers and have a little bit of ingenuity, you can still do a lot towards organizing your things. If you already have a bookcase unit you can use, the more the better. Place your bookcase in the closet if there's room or along a bedroom wall. You can then use plastic storage containers to store clothing and personal items. Put the boxes on the shelves where they will look bright and neat. You'll be amazed at how much that one little trick can do towards fixing up your bedroom.
Closet organizers are a great way to keep your clothes neat and accessible. By adding various organizer pieces, you'll be able to store everything away in a place of its own where you'll be able to find it easily the next time you need it.
